Evolution from a mental asylum to First NABH Accredited Mental Health Hospital in India

During British rule in India, the foundation of Hospital for Mental Health, Ahmedabad was laid on the 6thJanuary 1863, of course not as a ‘hospital’ but as a ‘mental asylum’. Due to growing attention to the mental health issues and rights-based movements, the set up established then has gone through numerous developmental phases and a fully equipped destination for comprehensive mental healthcare came in existence in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. At present, the Hospital for Mental Health, Ahmedabad has become a leader in mental health care services and is synonymous for delivering excellent and comprehensive quality care services not only in Gujarat, but also to the neighbouring States.
